We Just Got 300 Hens!

Surprise Hens

So the story goes that this last Thursday, Rachel Moser, of Be Whole Again Farm notified us that they had a major problem! In months prior they had a huge surplus of eggs, so they sold off a few of their hens to match demand. But, they worked through their mountain of eggs way quicker than they thought they would and they were about to run into a huge shortage. Luckily Rachel has super-duper-ninja-farming moves and located a flock of 300 hens that was for sale just north of Saint Joseph.

The first job Vivian and I had when we moved to Missouri was working at Be Whole Again and we loved our time there! We learned so much about regenerative agriculture and got to know a ton of people. We had such a great experience working with them and learning from them that we knew when we eventually went out on our own that we wanted to partner with them in some capacity. That prayer was finally answered last week! We’d been trying for months to work out an agreement to wholesale our pasture raised eggs to them. But, the timing wasn’t quite right.

Finally, this last Thursday at noon Rachel let us know about their problem and about how they were going to buy the flock, and have it delivered the next morning at 8 am. But she gave us the opportunity to buy it instead if we were interested. Vivian and I jumped on it!

I ran into town Friday morning at 7 to grab cash to pay the farmer who was dropping the flock off. We unloaded them at 8 sharp and I spent all day scrambling to add watering and feeding systems to the hen house, secure fencing, and assemble an extra roll away rest box for the boom in eggs we were about to experience.

This happened all in perfect timing for our first official public farm tour that was quickly approaching the next day!

Trevor marveling at the fact that we just pulled that off

Farm Tour Recap

The day flew off without a hitch! We had 20 folks show up from as close as 2 doors down and as far as Omaha, Nebraska. It was a beautiful hay wagon ride to and around the farm and everyone got to get up close and personal with the new flock of hens and the pigs! When we got back we gave away door prizes like our pasture raised, non-GMO eggs, pasture raised, non-GMO chicken breasts, thighs, and drumsticks. Finally, a few of us hung out and ate pizza for lunch at the winery.

The next farm tour will be September 28th at 11 am, so save the date! This time we’ll have bacon in the freezer, fewer pigs in the forest, and another batch of meat chickens back out on pasture. Hopefully a little bit cooler outside this next time too;)

How You Can Help In The World of Tech - Please Don't Skip This

#1 Add [email protected] to your email contacts. - This prevents our emails from going to spam and makes sure you get important information.

#2 Open Every Email - Even If You Don't Read Them :)
So this may seem small but it really really matters. Why?

Basically Google and other email providers track how often an email is opened to guess if it is important or not. If you don't open an email often enough than your inbox may stop showing it altogether. But it has a cumulative effect so if enough other people don't open theirs you might not see it too.

We are trying to walk back this trend and we could really use your help. Even if you don't have time to read the email ( I totally get it - no hurt feelings) would you please open it first and then delete it?  Thank you for keeping our small farm from being erased by big tech email filters!

#3 Share about our farm with your friends!
It really really makes a huge difference when you share with others about where you get your pasture raised bounty from! Plus it can make a huge difference in their life as well.

#4 Like us on Facebook + Instagram and share kitchen creations, unboxing pics, and all things Simple Living Farms
When you share about our farm we try to repost if too our page. It's really pretty cool to see!

Thank you for going the extra mile to support our family farm and regenerative agriculture! It is an honor to be your farmers!
